Magic comes in all shapes and sizes, and so do the people who use it. To celebrate Halloween, four authors got together to interview their magic-using characters and share the responses. And, as always happens when the four of us get together, to make some fun trouble.

That being said, the four of us have decided to break the interview pieces up so you can read them across our blogs.

Character Interview with JA Noble’s Between

Q: Do you remember the first time you used magic? If so, please tell us about it.

The first time I used magic at all was when I bartered with the upper river witch – for whom my family was the only ones willing to tailor and sew – to hide the pigskin pockets I’d sewn to my skin that I might not be trapped in the Demon Realm. The witch, who I only knew as Amaie, or “revered one” put her hands over mine and I felt her magic flow through my hands. It was a most amazing feeling, like charged water flowing through my very veins and out through my palms and fingertips. While I did not have the experience to compare at the time, now I can tell you my body reacted almost as if being touched by my husband or a lover – though Amaie made no such forward act, herself. I cannot, say, of course, how she felt while sharing her magic with me.

The first time I used my very own magic, earned through my trickery to not be bound to the Demon Realm, it felt even better – like when I push my lover beneath me and take control of our lovemaking. It was to move through the river waters as demons do – going wherever I pleased. After my first trip, I had to lay on the beach, spent as I had been on my wedding night. My husband stayed with me, apparently pleased with my efforts as I had been, and as the sun rose, he made love to me, lending me his power, that we might make it back to his home without the demon waters tearing my human side to pieces.

Since then, my power has grown, but is no less pleasurable to use.

Q: What is something you wish you could do with magic but haven’t been able to yet?

I wish I could cross to the Realm of the Dead and visit my twin and family, but even for demons and half-demon trickster witches, those gates only open once. And even when the ghosts slip through the veils for our offerings, they are but ghosts, and I cannot embrace them as I once did.

I also wish I could alter time that I might return to when my twin, my mother, and my father were still alive, but even the most powerful of full-blooded demons can only slow or pause time’s constant flow. I, myself, have only barely mastered slowing the moments between breaths and heartbeats that I might slip secret messages to the Mortal Realm.

Q: What is something you wish you had never done with magic?

Some days, I wish I had not even sewn these hidden pockets upon my flesh to stow away mortal food and drink. Some days, I wish I had let myself become fully demon because my ties to the Mortal Realm physically pain my body and heart. Other days, the days I am most ashamed of, I wish I had never tried to make a deal to save my twin sister and given away even a shred of my mortality.

Q: Do real witches have broomsticks and/or black cats?

I would think most anyone, save myself as I live in the watery demon lands, would need a broomstick to clean their home – even if they never touched it and left it for servants’ work. And many, regardless of magic, have cats to catch vermin. I have seen and heard murmurings in the further Mortal Realms of such things as brooms, wants, cats, or other special animals, being tied to those so-named witches, yet in all my years of wandering, I have seen many more witches who need no such thing and are no less witches – nor any less dangerous! – for such lacking.

Q: If you lost your magical abilities tomorrow, what would you pursue instead?

Well… I would be trapped in the Mortal Realm if so, for I’d drown in the Demon Realm. And I would much miss and ache for my husband… for something would have had to have happened to him for me to be stripped in that manner.

However, I am interested in the politics of the capital of my homelands. I see change coming, and I suppose I might fit myself into those games.

J.A. Noble lives in a special variety of dark ages that includes writing with quill and parchment, avoiding “selfies,” using “they” as a non-gendered pronoun (as is historically accurate), and being dragged kicking and screaming to the realm of Social Media by their publisher, beta readers, and the few folks who’ve been allowed to read 27 Kingdom scribblings. When not transferring handwritten notes to computer, Noble is usually healing from a variety of injuries that may or may not be directly related to being a barista, farm work, general klutziness, and/or dealing with dragons and cats.  Under other pen names, they have been published in newspapers, magazines, and online resources evaluating food, entertainment, science, education, alternative lifestyles, New Age “mysticism”, migrant workers, and long-distance shipping. All of which pay better than fiction but are not as satisfying as torturing entire societies with the sweep of a pen or the stroke of a key.
