Thoughtful Thursday: Author Taglines #Branding #AmWriting #ThoughtfulThursdays @Bellatrix_Press

Something that has been on my mind a lot lately is author branding and taglines. In case notebookttyou’re wondering, an author tagline is a short, spiffy sentence that encompasses the author’s “brand”.

Examples of author taglines are, “Life is Short, Go for the HEA” or “Romance with Bite”. Both of those taglines evoke specific responses. The first tagline conveys an author who writes romance with happily-ever-afters, while the second gives me the feeling of paranormal romances involving vampires or werewolves. My favorite tagline is V.C. Andrews’ “The Forbidden”, which describes her taboo books about children in peril, perfectly.

As a debut author, I’m still settling into who I am in the book world. I write about witches, but I also write contemporary romance — which is yet to be released, someday… So how do I narrow down a concise tagline that describes me and my writing?

They say not to base your tagline on genre, because most authors are genre-hoppers. Instead, the tagline should be about common themes in your work, and the feelings you hope to evoke in your readers. Do your characters overcome adversity? Do you craft kick-butt heroines? These are all things to consider while crafting a witty tagline to describe your “author brand”.

Brainstorming is key and it’s important to note that taglines need not be chiseled in stone. 🙂 Here are some guidelines:

1.) Be specific about what makes your writing unique from others. Encompass your writing “voice” into your tagline.

For instance, a novelist who writes fluffy cozy mysteries with humor is going to have a very different tagline than someone who writes political thriller/suspense. While both are techinically considered mysteries, they both have a very different feel to them.

2.) Keep it memorable and short.

Write a paragraph that describes yourself as a writer, and then hone it down to three to seven words.

3.) Sleep on it.

An author tagline doesn’t have to be crafted within fifteen minutes. Sleep on it and ask others for their opinions, too! Good luck crafting your author tagline!
